MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) Hip Replacement

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is becoming a popular option for patients needing a hip replaced. With this technique the orthopedic surgeon uses a 3- to 6-inch incision to implant an artificial hip. Traditional hip replacement surgery requires a larger incision, often up to 12 inches long. Special surgical instruments allow the surgeon to implant the same clinically proven implant used in traditional hip replacement surgery.

Patients find that minimally invasive hip surgery has many benefits:

  • A smaller incision
  • Less trauma to the body
  • Less blood loss
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Fewer days in the hospital (a typical stay is two days)
  • A shorter recovery time (weeks instead of months)
  • A smaller scar
  • Fewer complications

Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. After determining that you need a hip replacement, your orthopedic surgeon will work with you to determine which technique is right for you. You may be a candidate for MIS if you meet the following conditions:

  • Have good bone quality
  • Are in overall good health
  • Your weight is proportionate to your height

Committing to a program that includes physical and occupational therapy is also key to ensuring a successful surgical outcome and a quicker return to normal activities.
